Coushatta Tribe Celebrates Native American Heritage & Culture at 21st Annual Powwow June 10-11

Festivities Held in The Pavilion at Coushatta Casino Resort

May 20, 2016

Kinder, LA—The Coushatta Tribe’s 21st annual powwow, one of the largest in the South, will be held in The Pavilion at Coushatta on Friday and Saturday, June 10-11, 2016. Hundreds of representatives from tribes across the US and Canada come together each year to celebrate their culture with dance and drum contests. Native American artisans display their wares in the Powwow Marketplace, where one-of-a-kind silver jewelry, hand-beaded items, the famous Coushatta long-leaf pine needle baskets, and hand-painted pottery are among the many treasures to be discovered. The public is invited to attend this family-friendly alcohol-and-drug-free event. Admission for spectators is $5 per day; children ages 6 years and younger are admitted free of charge. Purchase tickets at the gate on day of show. For more information, visit the website: coushattapowwow.com.

The powwow begins with Gourd Dancing on Friday, June 11, at 5pm followed by Grand Entry at 7pm, the rhythmic march involving all the dancers that opens the dance and drum competitions. Native American dancers in vibrantly colored tribal regalia and breathtaking drum song performances are characteristic of all competitions throughout the two-day celebration.
